Two St Benet’s schools recognised by Ofsted after sustained improvement

Two primary schools within the Diocese of Norwich’s St Benet’s Multi-Academy Trust have been recognised by Ofsted following inspections earlier this year, after making marked progress since their previous inspections in 2023.

Newton Flotman Church of England Primary Academy and Diss Infant Academy and Nursery were both inspected in May 2026 and found to be meeting the expected standard in all areas. The outcomes reflect significant improvements over the past three years, following earlier judgements that both schools required improvement.

Inspectors noted the sustained work undertaken by school leaders, staff and the Trust to strengthen teaching, enhance pupils’ experiences and raise standards across each school.

At Newton Flotman, the report highlights an ambitious curriculum and a calm and purposeful learning environment. Improvements to behaviour, attendance and assessment were also recognised. Pupils were described as feeling “safe and happy”, while inspectors recognised the school’s inclusive approach and the positive relationships between staff and pupils.

Diss Infant Academy and Nursery was praised for its caring and nurturing environment, alongside a well-sequenced curriculum and strong support for pupils’ personal development. Inspectors also recognised improvements in attendance and the quality of education, as well as the school’s commitment to ensuring every child can succeed.

Both inspection reports acknowledge the role played by St Benet’s Multi-Academy Trust in supporting the schools’ development. Through leadership development, professional support, effective challenge and collaboration across its family of schools, the Trust has worked closely with both academies to secure improvements and build strong foundations for the future.

Sam Nixon, Chief Executive Officer of St Benet’s MAT, said:

“These inspections are a testament to the dedication and determination shown by everyone involved in both schools over the past three years and could not have been achieved without the leadership demonstrated by the headteachers, whose vision and commitment have driven sustained improvement, and the incredible efforts of their staff teams, who have worked tirelessly every day to provide the very best education for their pupils.

“School improvement is never achieved by one person alone. These outcomes reflect the strength of partnership between our schools, the Trust, governors, families and the wider community. Together, we have created environments where children are happy, safe and able to thrive, and it is rewarding to see Ofsted recognise that progress.

“While we are delighted with these outcomes, our focus remains on continuous improvement. We will continue to work alongside both schools to build on this success and ensure every child receives the highest quality education.”

Safeguarding was confirmed to be effective in both schools, with inspectors noting that pupils benefit from environments where they feel supported, valued and encouraged to achieve their best.

The inspections mark an important stage in each school’s development, reflecting the impact of sustained collaboration between schools and the Trust, and reinforcing St Benet’s commitment to strong leadership, shared expertise and ongoing improvement.
