Run Necton brings community spirit to Sports Week

Pupils at Necton Church of England Primary School raised funds for new classroom technology during a running event held as part of Sports Week.

“Run Necton” saw children from Reception to Year 6 complete a series of runs across the day, supported by staff, visitors and classmates. The event featured Team GB athlete Logan Smith, who has competed at national and international level, encouraging pupils and sharing his experience of training and competition. Having learned shortly before the event that he would be joining them, the children responded well to his guidance as they prepared for their runs.

The event aimed to raise funds for new iPads for the school, while also giving pupils the chance to work together and contribute towards a wider charitable cause. It is jointly fundraising with Norfolk Community Sports Foundation and was inspired by Norwich’s annual city running festival, bringing a similar experience into the school setting.

Pupil Lucas said: “I’m confident about the running, even though I’m not the best runner. I’ll definitely try and do as many laps as I can, but it doesn’t matter how many laps.”

Pupils ran in groups and cheered each other on throughout the day, creating a supportive atmosphere. Run Necton formed part of a wider Sports Week programme, which included outdoor adventure sessions, a climbing wall, Aeroball activities and the school’s annual Sports Day. The event also took place during an Ofsted inspection, giving inspectors the opportunity to see the school community working together.

Headteacher Vicki Long said: “Run Necton was a hugely memorable event for our school community. The joy and elation the children experienced through taking part has been wonderful to see, and they shone throughout the day. It gave them the chance to come together as a team, to support one another, and to give their best. This reflects what we stand for as a school: rooted in Christ, we learn, grow and achieve together. It was particularly special to see our values of belonging, believing, thriving and achieving come to life in such a positive way. We are very grateful to everyone who supported the event, including the Norfolk Community Sports Foundation and Logan Smith, whose encouragement made a real difference.”
