King’s Lynn youth group helps young people build friendships

A new youth group in King’s Lynn is providing a place for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) and those who are neurodivergent to spend time together and feel at ease.

J Team meets at Gaywood Church Rooms and has been set up by St Faith’s Church Gaywood LEP with local volunteers. It follows the closure of a long-running group last year and continues support for families who valued that space.

The group responds to those who attend. Young people help shape activities, supported by volunteers with professional backgrounds and personal experience of neurodiversity. Some volunteers bring their own lived experience, helping to ensure the sessions are sensitive to different needs.

J Team is open to young people with a wide range of needs, including autism, ADHD, dyslexia and dyspraxia. A formal diagnosis is not needed.

Each session offers a choice of activities, such as games, creative work and shared tasks. Young people can join in at their own pace, spend time with others and try something new if they wish. The focus is on building friendships in a setting where people feel comfortable.

The project is supported by volunteers including Tina and Martin Beale, who help run the group each week.

Revd Kyla Sørensen said: “The response shows how church and community can work together to support young people and their families.”

Parents and carers are also offered a short break during sessions, knowing their children are in a safe and understanding environment.

J Team meets on Mondays, 6.30pm–8.30pm during term time at Gaywood Church Rooms. For more information, visit www.stfaithsgaywoodlep.org.uk.
