The Decarbonising Churches Grant Fund (DCGF) is a national Church of England scheme that helps churches move to low‑carbon heating and improve energy efficiency, particularly if they have a failing heating system or high energy use. It offers funding for both planning (up to £15,000) and major works—including grants of up to £80,000 for full decarbonisation or support for replacing failed gas, oil or electric systems with cleaner alternatives. Most funded projects will focus on electric heating, insulation and, where appropriate, solar panels.
To access the highest funding, churches will need to remove fossil fuels, switch to a green electricity tariff and improve energy efficiency, although projects can be done in stages. Churches will usually need an Energy Footprint Tool assessment, Eco Church engagement, and PCC approval, and should speak first with their diocesan Net Zero officer before applying. The fund does not cover ongoing costs like energy bills, but can significantly reduce upfront costs of major upgrades.
