See Matthew’s matchstick cathedral at charity open garden

See an amazing matchstick model of Norwich Cathedral – alongside the real thing.

The model will be on show when the Bishop of Norwich opens his garden in aid of Nansa this coming Sunday.

Nansa helps people living with, or caring for others with, special educational needs and disabilities. It will host live music, games, stalls and refreshments in the spectacular four-acre garden alongside Norwich Cathedral.

As well as the delights of the oldest private garden in Norwich visitors will be able to admire Matthew Shackshaft’s astonishing handiwork.

Matthew, who is 28 and attends the Nansa adult centre in Norwich, spent five years, and more than 20,000 matchsticks, painstakingly creating his model cathedral.

It will be on show as part of the open garden afternoon.

From the garden there are views of the original cathedral too, with the ornate Norman stonework of its northern side only visible from here. There are also flower-filled double borders backed by cloud-pruned yew, towering exotic plants, an orchard and wildflower labyrinth, lawns and walks, and a wonderfully productive kitchen garden and newly replanted herb garden.

The Bishop’s Garden will be open 1-4.30pm (last entry 4pm) on Sunday June 15 (Fathers’ Day), for Nansa. Refreshments, plant sales, stalls, live music. Admission £5, free for children and wheelchair-users. Assistance dogs only. Bishop’s Garden, Norwich, NR3 1SB. Follow the garden on Instagram

It will also be open on:

22 June – for Norfolk Churches Trust

6 July – for the National Garden Scheme

13 July – for Leeway

20 July – for Vision Norfolk

27 July – for RSPCA East Winch Wildlife Centre
