From county-wide recognition to a local radio interview, Heartwood CofE VA Primary School has plenty to celebrate.
The school has been selected as an example of best practice for Active Travel in Norfolk, recognising the significant progress made over the past two years in promoting sustainable and healthy journeys to school.
Heartwood’s work has been acknowledged by several organisations, including the Active Travel Team, Walk, Wheel & Cycle, AtoBetter, the Norfolk Road Safety Team and Breckland Highways, which unanimously chose the school to showcase the positive impact of its active travel initiatives.
Mrs Cara Butters, Forest School Leader, said; “Reflecting on the past two years, I could not be prouder of all that we have achieved together. What began as a vision to improve our school street has grown into a culture where active travel is woven into the fabric of our school community.”
As part of this recognition, Mrs Butters will take part in a series of video interviews that will be used to support training and inspire other schools across the county.
“Being recognised by departments within Norfolk County Council for good practice is a milestone we are incredibly proud of. It is wonderful to have the opportunity to share our journey and help inspire other schools across the county.”
The achievement reflects the dedication of the whole school community. Staff, families and pupils have all played an important role in making active travel a positive and valued part of everyday life at Heartwood.
The celebrations did not end there. Mrs Butters and two Year 6 pupils were invited to appear on BBC Radio Norfolk with Kayleigh Poacher. During the interview, they shared their experiences of active travel and discussed the Government’s ambition to see 60% of children travelling actively to school by 2035.
Mrs Butters said; “Sharing our experiences on BBC Radio Norfolk was another proud moment for our school. It gave our pupils the chance to talk about active travel and demonstrate the confidence and enthusiasm they bring to everything they do.”
The pupils represented the school brilliantly, speaking with confidence and enthusiasm and proving to be excellent ambassadors for Heartwood.
“Our greatest achievement is seeing the lasting impact on our children and families every day. This journey has shown what is possible when a community embraces a shared purpose. We have built something that will benefit generations to come, and I truly believe this is only the beginning.”
