The Bishop of Norwich has joined Christian, Jewish and Muslim faith leaders in calling on Andy Burnham to put climate and nature at the heart of his new government’s mission.
Mr Burnham is expected to become Prime Minister on Monday.
The four faith leaders – Bishop Graham, who is the Church of England lead bishop for the environment, Rabbi Jonathan Witternberg OBE the Senior Rabbi of Masorti Judaism, Bishop of Salford John Arnold who is the Catholic lead bishop for the environment, and Shaykh Ibrahim Mogra, co-chair of the Christian Muslim Forum – are asking Mr Burnham to prioritise urgent action for climate and nature, and offering to work with him for the common good.
Noting how the climate and nature crises are harming our national security, economy and health they pointed to opportunities to develop cleaner and cheaper energy and green jobs.
“Few decisions of your premiership will matter more to future generations than those concerning our climate and the natural world. On this, our different faith traditions speak with one voice,” they wrote. “History will judge our generation not by the challenges we inherited, but by the courage of our response.”
