“Singing alongside fellow choir members in such a historic and spiritual setting was deeply moving. It felt like our voices carried both celebration and prayer. It was a moment of pride, gratitude and connection that I’ll always treasure,” said choir member and primary school teacher Ellen.
She said she loved the ‘profound sense of unity and reverence that filled the cathedral.’
“Singing is one of the most heartfelt ways I express my faith. It allows me to connect deeply with God, to worship with joy and to share His love through music. Whether I’m singing in church or with the African Choir of Norfolk or on my own at home, it feels like prayer in motion – a way to lift others and celebrate the hope and grace that faith brings.”
Her own faith journey began in Ghana.
“I grew up in a church-going family and was baptised as a baby in the Anglican Church in Ghana. Faith was always part of our home life, but at 18 I made a personal decision to follow Jesus and deepen my relationship with Him. That moment marked the beginning of my own faith journey, beyond family tradition.”
She and her husband have lived in Norwich for more than 20 years and have three children.
Three years ago the African Choir of Norfolk was featured on local television and Ellen spotted a friend singing. Soon she had joined too, intrigued by their performance and message.
“What I enjoy most about being part of the African Choir of Norfolk is the deep sense of community and connection it brings. Singing together allows me to express my faith and identity while celebrating African culture in a joyful, purposeful way. Each rehearsal and performance inspires growth musically, spiritually and personally. It also reminds me how powerful it is when voices unite to share hope and harmony,” said Ellen, who is a member of CityGates church, Norwich.
“Norwich has truly become home, a place where family, faith and community all come together.”
