Pupils generously donate reverse advent calendars to Gorleston Foodbank

Pupils from Woodlands Primary Academy school in Bradwell and members of the public in Gorleston have made generous donations to Gorleston Foodbank through collections for reverse advent calendars.

In November, the children collected one item per day for the foodbank and were invited to bring the whole donation during the first week of December. As a prize, they could receive their own chocolate advent calendar as a reward.

The foodbank is located at St Mary Magdalene Church in Gorleston and the donations were brought there.

On Monday 1 December, pupils featured on BBC Radio Norfolk with Chris Goreham to explain why they did it, along with Anna Price the Community Strategic Manager at St Mary Magdalene church. Anna explained;

“they’ve been collecting food all the way through November, and their reward is an advent calendar. About 100 children signed up at Woodlands and I think there’s enough food here to last for several months at the foodbank. It’s an extraordinary amount of food.”

A pupil who donated food explained on the radio what a reverse advent calendar is:

“It’s where instead of us getting food, we give food to people who can’t afford it.”

Another child had a simple message to give:

“The world needs to be a better place and we need to help people who can’t afford it.”
