A new Standard has been dedicated at a special service in time for Remembrance Sunday and other community ceremonies.
The Standard is for St John’s Church in Harleston, which was severely damaged by an accidental fire in September 2025. Unfortunately, the previous Standard was too damaged to salvage.
The Harleston Standard was dedicated by Revd Sally Theakston, Chaplain to the Bishop of Norwich on Saturday 1 November 2025. Revd Sally has served in the Diocese of Norwich for over 20 years, having previously been the first woman Anglican chaplain to serve in the Royal Navy. Revd Sally said;
“The Standard is a constant symbolic reminder to members of the Legion’s motto ‘Service not self.’ The crosses of St George, St Andrew and St Patrick symbolise unity, chivalry and our loyalty to our Sovereign, community and nation. The blue indicates loyalty and fidelity and the gold signifies service “as gold is tried by fire” and reminds us of all those who gave their lives for our country.
Standards are dedicated before being taken into use, and are laid-up in sacred or public buildings after service.”
Remembrance Sunday is on 9 November. In Harleston, the Town Council and the Harleston and District Branch of the Royal British Legion warmly invite all members of the community to join the Remembrance Sunday parade and service.
The parade begins at 10.30am and starts from the Market Place, followed by a service at the War Memorial. Due to the recent fire at the church, the Service of Remembrance will be held at London Road Methodist Church, starting at 11.30am following the War Memorial service.
RBL Branch Padre John Taylor will lead the service which is open to all.
