Last summer Sunday openings for Bishop’s hidden-gem garden

See the oldest private garden in Norwich in its full summer finery this Sunday July 20 and Sunday July 27.

The Bishop of Norwich opens his garden for local charities every spring and summer and will be hosting Vision Norfolk on July 20 and RSPCA East Winch Wildlife Centre on July 27.

The final two open afternoons of the season are a chance to wander four acres of magnificent flowery walks and borders, a thriving kitchen garden and orchard, shady paths and bowers, and see exotic and native plants in a historic setting beside Norwich Cathedral.

On July 20 Vision Norfolk, which supports people living with sight loss across the county, will be celebrating its 220th anniversary with a garden party. As well as the gorgeous gardens there will be music, garden games and delicious home-made refreshments.

Chief executive Andrew Morter said: “We are extremely grateful to Bishop Graham for allowing us to hold our garden party in his stunning garden, and we are aiming to make it a real celebration both of what the charity does, and also the contribution that vision impaired people make to the life of Norfolk.

“This is a very special year for the charity, which is one of the oldest in Norfolk. We have set ourselves a fundraising challenge with the aim of raising £220,000 in our anniversary year, to boost the support we give to people living with sight loss to live independent and fulfilled lives.”

Tickets to the Vision Norfolk garden party can be bought in advance. Any remaining tickets will be available on the gate.

On July 27 the garden will be open in aid of RSPCA East Winch Wildlife Centre which rescues, rehabilitates and releases British wildlife from the largest seal to the smallest shrew. Last year the centre took in 3,000 animals.

Visitors will be able to enjoy the gardens plus live music, garden games, gift and plant stalls, refreshments and the chance to learn more about wildlife.

The Bishop’s Garden will be open 1-4.30pm (last entry 4pm) on July 20 and 27. Tickets £5, free for children and wheelchair-users. Refreshments and plant stall. Assistance dogs only. Bishop’s Garden, Norwich, NR3 1SB.
