The Bishop of Norwich has joined fellow-Parliamentarians in calling for a prime-time televised national briefing on the risks posed by climate change and nature loss.
The cross-party list of MPs and peers believe the public should be properly informed about the climate-related threats facing the nation and are calling for a televised briefing to communicate the challenges clearly and directly.
Delivered by independent experts and supported by the Chief Scientific Adviser it would set out the scale of threats to the UK’s food security, health, infrastructure, economy and national security, and the ways government, businesses and individuals can respond.
The call is not party political or suggesting particular policies.
The Bishop of Norwich also encourages anyone concerned by climate change and nature loss to contact their MP, asking for their support and more action.
As the Church of England lead bishop for the environment Bishop Graham Usher is involved with the Church’s work to combat climate change and nature loss, and attended the National Emergency Briefing on Climate and Nature held in Westminster in November.
It brought together scientists, politicians, security specialists, economists, health experts, environmental researchers and business leaders to hear the latest evidence on the potential impacts of the escalating climate and nature crisis.
The organisers are also creating a documentary which they hope will be screened in communities across the country from April to ensure people understand the profound risks posed by the climate crisis. Venues screening the film will be announced later this spring.
