AMP up the music

Action songs are top of the pops with the children of Attleborough.

St Mary’s Church in Attleborough runs a music project including a children’s choir called AMP Voices.

Every Tuesday after school during term time the children meet to learn new songs, sing old favourites, make friends and have fun.

Attleborough Music Project (AMP) was launched in 2021 to provide a centre of musical excellence for people across the town and nearby communities.

It aims to help people play, sing and listen to music, enhancing skills and boosting well-being.

The children’s choir is free, open to all primary school-aged children, and led by music outreach worker Tom Appleton, who has worked with St Paul’s Cathedral, national youth music organisations and the Monteverdi Choir. It performs for special occasions and the church summer fete, Christmas carol service and community music day. St Mary’s also has a church choir.

Plans for the future include outreach work using both the church and church hall, restoring the 100-year-old church organ and a scholarship scheme for young organists.

The project has also run workshops for schoolchildren with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and the Britten Sinfonia.

Funding has come from music-making charities and the proceeds of its concert. AMP also works with the Norfolk and Suffolk Music Hub.

AMP Voices meets on Tuesdays from 3.30pm-4.30pm at St Mary’s Church, Attleborough. New members are always welcome. For more information email music.attleboroughchurch@outlook.com
