Norwich Cathedral recently hosted an uplifting Year 6 Leavers service and workshop, offering pupils from five Church of England schools a wonderful opportunity to reflect on their primary school journey and look ahead to secondary school. The day, filled with joy, reflection, and creative expression, left a lasting positive impression.
The day began with a thought-provoking time of collective worship based on the Bible story of the road to Emmaus, leading into three engaging and interactive workshops enabling pupils to reflect on and prepare for the future:
· Memories – looking at Cathedral graffiti and creating their own graffiti print
· Moment – considering the moment they are in now and creating time capsules
· Mapping – discussing an unknown journey ahead and using the symbol of light to journey through the Cathedral reflecting on Jesus the light of the world
The final act of collective worship, held in the Cathedral’s magnificent presbytery, was a poignant and celebratory occasion. Year 6 pupils and teachers gathered to mark this significant transition. The service blended traditional elements with contemporary relevance, including pupils lighting candles and leaving them on the ground as they quietly left the worship space following a blessing from the Bishop of Norwich.
Paul Dunning, Diocesan Director of Education, said:
“The Year 6 Leavers Service and workshop at Norwich Cathedral was an overwhelmingly positive experience. It provided a fitting and memorable send-off, equipping pupils for future adventures and offering a beautiful bridge to secondary education.”
Cathedral staff and volunteers ensured a smooth and welcoming experience, significantly contributing to the day’s success.
Clare Williams, Head of Schools & Family Learning at the Cathedral said:
“We love this special event and wish all the pupils present, and in Year 6 across the Diocese, God’s blessing as they head off to secondary school. We hope that many more schools will join us next year to share this special time of being together as a Diocesan family.”
