A career in caring leads to a call to ministry

Lorraine lives in Oulton Broad and will be ordained in June. She will become a Curate at Pakefield Church. This is Lorraine’s story about her journey to faith and ordination.

What was your journey to faith?

I think it’s got a huge amount to do with my grandmother, she introduced me to her local village church, she was a can do woman and really involved in her local community. So from a very early age, I was involved in that, but is has developed through my nursing career, I had 20 years as a nurse and I was also a foster carer. My vocation has grown from there to where I am now.

What was your route to ministry?

As a foster carer, my husband and I specialised in looking after parents with new borns and our church family was very supportive, they were part of our support network.

My journey to explore ordination came from that role, of young people really needing additional support, introducing them to our faith and seeing how powerful it was to  introduce young people from very troubled backgrounds to our wonderful faith.

What are you looking forward to most in this role?

To being the bridge between church and my community and growing that community.

What advice would you give to anyone exploring a vocation to ministry?

My advice would be;  it isn’t a one size fits all, don’t think it couldn’t possibly be me, it’s really important to speak with Lucy or someone from the Diocese and to explore that calling from God to see what God has in mind for you. It’s very exciting.
