Advent Sunday and confirmations

Advent is four weeks long and marks the beginning of the Christian year. The first Sunday of Advent is always four Sundays before Christmas, and this year it was on 30 November 2025. ‘Advent’ means ‘coming’. It is a season of expectation and preparation as the Church prepares to celebrate the coming of Christ. Purple is the traditional colour used which is why you may see purple candles on the Advent wreath.

On Advent Sunday, The Bishop of Lynn, the Rt Revd Dr Jane Steen was at Cawston church to confirm five people, ranging from 11 to 89 years as part of the Advent Sunday Communion Service.

The Bishop of Thetford, the Rt Revd Ian Bishop was at Wymondham Abbey to confirm six young people and wrote on social media: “Something of the quiet revival here, young candidates for confirmation stepped forward to follow Jesus.”

The Bishop of Norwich, the Rt Revd Graham Usher spent Advent Sunday at Garboldisham to license the Revd Lynn Fry as Associate Priest.
