King’s Lynn Minster are hosting the ‘Coat of Hopes’ from the 27 January to 11 February 2025, including a special Exhibition weekend from the 7 to 9 February.
The Coat of Hopes is a patchwork pilgrim coat, on an ongoing walk through Britain.
Made, worn and walked by many hundreds of people during and since the pilgrimage on which it was created – from the south coast of England to the gates of COP 26, the UN climate summit, in Glasgow autumn 2021. The Coat is made up of pieces of blanket into which people have worked their griefs, remembrances, prayers and hopes for the place they call home.
Revd Canon Dr Mark Dimond is team rector at King’s Lynn Minster. Revd Mark says:
“This is an exciting, relevant and impactful initiative, which helps to raise awareness about the state of our God-given, precious planet and our responsibility to look after it.”
It has been walked from Ely to King’s Lynn and is currently on display resting in the Trinity Chapel at King’s Lynn Minster.
On Friday 7th February at 10am the Mayor of King’s Lynn & West Norfolk will be opening a 3 day exhibition of the Coat of Hopes, there will a public reception with tea and cakes and everyone is invited to come along.
During the three days the Coat will be on display in the Minster on the chancel steps. There will be stewards on hand to talk about the Coat and we will also have a free children’s activity, where they can join in making a section for a ‘Banner of Hope’ to keep here in King’s Lynn. This will then be on display in the Minster during 2025 as a commemoration of the visit, with contributions from local children.
The exhibition and children’s activities are free to attend and open as follows:
Friday 7th February 10am – 4pm
Saturday 8th February 10am – 4pm
Sunday 9th February 11.15am – 4pm (after the Sunday morning service)
The Coat will then be returned to Ely and will be on display in Ely Cathedral from the 12th – 20th February. On the 21 February the Coat will begin the next stage of its walk heading from Ely to Norwich, where it will be on display at the Octagon Chapel on Sunday 9th March.
