Each class in the Primary phase of Harleston Sancroft Academy had the opportunity this term to create a large piece of artwork representing a Station of the Cross. These stations have been placed throughout the town, creating a trail in shop windows that people are able to follow and recall the journey of the Cross.
The ‘Stations of the Cross’ or the ‘Way of the Cross’ are a series of images depicting Jesus Christ on the day of his Crucifixion. Images are commonly displayed in order along a path for people to follow and engage in reflection and prayer at each step of Jesus Christ’s journey.
The stations culminate in a station of the Resurrection, created by Year 1, which is displayed in St John the Baptist Church and will form a central part of the Easter Sunday Communion Service as a visible reminder of the Risen Christ. The primary aged school children used and commissioned the images at their end of term Easter Service on Friday 31st March, with each year group offering readings and prayers whilst sharing the artwork they had created with the whole school.
There will also be the opportunity to walk the way of the Cross on Good Friday at 10am, in an ecumenical gathering set to follow the stations through the town. This time of devotion will end by remembering Jesus being placed in the tomb. Afterwards, people can enjoy fellowship and refreshments at London Road Methodist & URC Church.
