St George was celebrated in style with a ceremony on Tuesday 26 April and a procession including a dragon and a Bishop.
The evening began with a service led by the Bishop of Norwich, The Right Revd Graham Usher at St George’s Church in Tombland. After the service, Snap the civic dragon and his entourage met Bishop Graham and the congregation outside the church and led them in procession to St George’s Church in Colegate.
Assistant Curate Revd Annie Blyth at Colegate and Tombland said;
Snap entertained everyone by being playful and rather naughty during the procession, he frightened drinkers in the pubs and chased passers-by, and when he tried to bite the Bishop, Bishop Graham managed to put Snap in his place and fought him off with his crozier.
The event took place to celebrate St George, the patron saint of the Tombland and Colegate churches, and of course, England. Usually, the patron saint day is celebrated on 23 April, but in the Church of England, if it falls between Palm Sunday and the second Sunday of Easter, it is moved to the next available day.
