Cafe Cuthbert serving the community in Thetford

If you find yourself in Thetford on a Saturday morning, a little thirsty and ready for a bite to eat, then Café Cuthbert is ready for you.

“It’s open to absolutely anyone who wants to come,” said the Rector of Thetford, the Revd Dr Peter Herbert.

Café Cuthbert was launched by the church in 2022 and offers hot and cold drinks, cakes and bakes, and light hot food – and the chance to enjoy it all in a fine medieval church.

St Cuthbert’s, on King Street, dates back to the 13th century and Peter said: “Customers love the warm and friendly welcome, the opportunity for conversation with the team, the quality of the food, and the beautiful building.”

Run by a team of volunteers, with a part-time paid manager recently appointed, Café Cuthbert is open 10am-2pm most Saturdays (unless there is a wedding). “There are hopes and plans to extend the opening to Fridays also – and perhaps further days in the fulness of time,” said Peter.

Other services and events with a side order of food from the Thetford Team Ministry include The Good Grief Café, held every fortnight at Cloverfield Community Church. Welcoming, friendly and informal it is for anyone who has suffered the loss of someone dear to them and would like to call in for a coffee and a chat. St Cuthbert’s hosts a men’s breakfast with an evangelistic talk from a guest speaker, and there are also teas, lunches and, at this time of year, harvest suppers.
