Global Sports Sunday is coming up on Sunday 18 September and it’s an opportunity for churches to pray for the world of sport. Susie Bratby is a trainee sports minister in the Diocese of Norwich and shares her thoughts about this special day.

“Elation, devastation, joy; just some of the feelings of athletes over the last couple of weeks who have been competing at the largest Commonwealth Games ever. Birmingham has hosted 72 teams and over 1.2 million tickets have been sold!

It has also been the first major international multi-sports event to integrate para and non-para athletes. Women’s sport is breaking records left, right and centre, with 17.4 million people watching the Lionesses win the Euro’s against Germany. It is hard to miss the world of sport. On average, more than half of the world’s population participates in a sports community weekly.

Wouldn’t it be great, if as churches we were connected to our local sports teams by serving them and praying for them?

On Sunday 18 September it is Global Sports Sunday. This is an opportunity for churches to pray for the world of sport. Could you incorporate some light stretches while praying, find out who in your church is sporty and pray for them and their team mates, or ask local sports teams if you can support them in anyway?

Let’s be churches that are outward looking, reaching people of all cultures, ages, and abilities that are involved in sport. Could we also encourage those who aren’t involved in sport and provide sport for our communities, so people are able to use the body that God has given them while reaping the many benefits to physical activity.”
