Specialist Cathedral Tours

Starting in July, on the first Wednesday of every month the Cathedral’s expert guides will be offering two talks on a specific aspect of the Cathedral’s story over the last 900 years.

Starting on Wednesday 6 July with tours exploring The Close and the Cloister, other tours coming up over the next few months include subjects ranging from stained glass to monastic life.

Tickets for each tour cost £3 plus booking fee and should be booked in advance via the Cathedral website.

The Close – Wednesday 6 July at 11.15am
Join Jan King for a walk round the Cathedral Close, looking at what happened to the monastic buildings after the dissolution of the monastery and learning about some of the characters who have lived there since.

The Cloister – Wednesday 6 July at 2.15pm
Nigel Wimhurst takes a tour around the Cathedral’s Cloister, the largest of its kind in the country.

Stained Glass – Wednesday 3 August at 11.15pm
Join David Bussey on this tour giving visitors the chance to enjoy Norwich Cathedral’s rich heritage of stained glass, mainly from the last two hundred years, in all its colour and variety.

Martha the Monastery Maid – Wednesday 3 August at 2.15pm
On this tour with Liz Scott, discover what life was like when Martha the Monastery Maid worked for the Benedictine monks in Norwich in the 1300s.

Monastic Life – Wednesday 7 September at 11.15am
Terry Adkin gives a brief introduction to the Benedictine monastery of Norwich Cathedral and the daily life of the monks.

Julian of Norwich – Wednesday 7 September at 2.15pm
Keith Carlton askes who was Julian of Norwich and why do we celebrate her? The tour of the cathedral will explore her life, her role in medieval society, and why she is ’the mother of English prose’. With an optional visit to the church where she lived as an anchoress.

Each specialist tour will last about 90 minutes and the tours will start outside the Cathedral shop.
