For many veterans and emergency service personnel, the transition to civilian life can be challenging. Feelings of isolation, loss of identity and the lasting effects of trauma can affect everyday life long after service has ended.
Veterans Central SHQ, based at the former RAF West Raynham Station Headquarters, provides a welcoming community for veterans and Blue Light workers. Run by volunteers, the centre offers friendship, practical support and opportunities to reconnect with others who share similar experiences.
The Revd Edward Gunn, Assistant Curate (The Coxford Group of Parishes with Toftrees), said:
“SHQ’s work is so important because it starts with the person, listening to where they are, understanding what they need, and giving them a safe place where they can feel accepted and simply be themselves.
Its support makes a real difference to veterans and former emergency services personnel, but also to their families. SHQ is a community where people feel welcomed, valued and cared for, where no one is left out. By building bridges between the past and the present, SHQ helps people find connection, support and a sense of belonging when they may need it most.”
Visitors can take part in social activities, access wellbeing gardens and receive support from partner organisations including Walking with the Wounded and the Royal British Legion. The centre also offers opportunities to learn new skills through volunteering on the restoration of the historic RAF site.
Together with Fr Clive, the Revd Edward has seen the difference the centre makes to those who visit. They encourage churches to share information about the charity, particularly in areas with strong military connections, and to signpost veterans, former emergency service personnel and their families who may need additional support.
The centre is open every Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday from 10am to 3pm at West Raynham Business Park near Fakenham. Those who would like to find out more can call 07379 487241, email info@veteranscentral.co.uk or visit the Veterans Central Facebook page.
Please keep the volunteers and all those who use the centre in your prayers.
