Bishop to talk at book festival

The Bishop of Norwich is one of the writers taking part in the Leiston Book Festival on Saturday September 19.

This year’s festival is themed around weather, walking, the ground beneath our feet, the seagulls above and climate fiction.

Bishop Graham, who is the Church of England’s lead bishop for the environment, will be talking about his book The Way Under Our Feet.

It celebrates walking as a way of experiencing life, of drawing close to people and to the natural world, and a way of remembering, adventuring, praying and discovering.

He writes about his own love of walking and draws on walks undertaken from pilgrims to refugees, and from Jesus in the Holy Land to Captain Oates in in the Antarctic. The Way Under Our Feet was described as a lovely book, full of light, grace and meaning by Dame Fiona Reynolds, Master of Emmanuel College Cambridge.

The bishop will be interviewed by local broadcaster and presenter Georgy Jamieson, alongsidenovelist Deborah Tomkins who co-chaired environmental charity Green Christian and founded the Christian Climate Writers network.

Bishop Graham said: “I hope to share something of the joy I find in walking, and the effort and reward of slowing down and paying attention. Walking beneath our big East Anglian skies is a chance to see both the big picture and the smallest details of the natural world. For me there is a spiritual dimension too which I’ll be speaking about at this year’s Leiston Book Festival because I believe that walking is a way to explore different ways of experiencing and valuing creation.”

Bishop Graham was recently named one of the UK’s 100 most influential climate and sustainability leaders. An ecologist by background, he writes about spirituality, landscapes and nature and speaks about environmental legislation and concerns as part of his role as a Lord Spiritual in the House of Lords.
