Women of the Wild Frontier – Art Exhibition of work by Frances Martin
Wed 26 Feb - Sun 12 Apr
Norwich Cathedral, Norwich, NR1 4DH
View a series of mixed media artworks based on female saints by local artist Frances Martin, working out of St Etheldreda's Church in Norwich. Monday - Saturday 9.30am - 4.30pm Sundays 10am - 3pm
The exhibition will feature a series of artworks based on female saints, and saint-like figures. Some works use contemporaries as subjects, these may be linked loosely, sometimes more referentially. Works include a series titled The Kindness of Women, which directly reference the timing of Biblical events in the Lent period.
The works are mixed media, some black and white – charcoal and charcoal dust – and also in strong colour; using inks on watercolour paper to gain the boldness of stained glass.
They have been created in Frances’ studio, in St Etheldreda’s Church – a short walk south of the cathedral, in King Street.
Frances Martin: ‘I am especially interested in the stories and symbols, emblems, instruments and also animals which the figures are linked with.
A major influence has been stained glass windows, from the former St Mary’s Priory, plus other locations, from medieval times. I love the simplicity of the glass, both line and bold colour.
I would like to draw from the real spiritual significance of the cathedral environment, and to place these saintly women in the space will, I hope, feel right.’
