Online discipleship: Intro to the Old Testament

Mon 16 Jan at 12.30 am - Sun 26 Feb at 11.30 pm

Online, Norfolk

How can you tackle the Old Testament in a few hours of learning? For a start, focus on what helps to understand the Christian Gospel via an online course working with others at times that suit you.

In six weeks of online work together? You must be joking! Yes, but it’s a beginning. And the angle this course takes is to explore what Christians need to know of the Hebrew Scriptures in order to better understand the good news of Jesus Christ.

This module follows on from the successful Encountering God online event in late 2022, completed by a number of AWAs and others. Learners on that course spent a bit less than an hour a day on activities and the evaluation responses showed that most people “learnt at least as much as in any other mode of learning”, rated “enjoyment” as “very good” and felt that the course had been “helpful” or “very helpful” to their Christian walk. Most are planning to come back for more in January!

The module is the second in Chelmsford Diocese’s long-running Course in Christian Studies. The online version uses a quick-to-learn virtual learning environment (Moodle) where you interact with learning material, other learners and facilitator Peter Nicholls.

Each week’s learning is ‘book-ended’ with worship ideas, too, to encourage you to journey with God as well as each other.

The course will start on Monday 16 January 2023, and, if you’re new to it, there will be chances to familiarise yourself with the learning environment during the week before. You log on when and for how long suits you during the week, making your responses and responding to others’ at your convenience. (It was particularly striking how much AWAs and others valued meeting and working with one another in the first module.)

In brief, this module will look at different kinds of writing in the Old Testament; examine the Hebrew Scriptures – the Old Testament – as they have been understood by Christians, and look at the questions and longings that arose from Israel’s relationship with God which Christians believe are answered by Jesus Christ.

There is a fee of £15 for the course, but this is waived for AWAs. If you are an AWA, please apply through Sue Hemsley Halls. Otherwise please book via Eventbrite – bookings will open soon. Check back here for the link.
