NCCL: How many Gods are there – according to Deuteronomy?

Sat 4 Mar 2023 at 10.00 am - 12.30 pm

Norwich Cathedral, Norwich, NR1 4DH

What can we uncover about the dynamic in Deuteronomy between the One God and the many gods?

Deuteronomy contains the Bible’s most majestic claim of the oneness of God: the Shema (“Hear, O Israel, the LORD our God, the LORD is one”, Deut. 6.4), affirmed by Jesus in the New Testament. It also has much to say about the “other gods”, who are served by the existing peoples of the Land, so much so that interpreters often say that the Deuteronomist is a “henotheist”, believing other gods exist, but only the LORD is to be worshipped.
